Sea Hunt Boat Upholstery, Priced So It Makes Sense on the Boat

There is a version of this conversation we have a lot with Sea Hunt owners, and it starts with them apologizing for the boat.

They should not. Sea Hunt sells an enormous number of boats in Florida because the boats are good and the money makes sense, and the owners tend to be people who actually use them rather than people who keep them clean. When the seating goes, the honest question is not whether the boat deserves the work. It is whether the quote is proportionate to the boat.

That is a fair question and most marine upholstery shops answer it badly, by quoting every job like it is on a sportfish. We price these to be worth doing, and we will tell you when a partial package gets you most of the way there.

We are not affiliated with Sea Hunt Boats. We build upholstery that fits their boats.

Doing the pieces that matter

On a boat where a full deck package is a meaningful fraction of what the boat is worth, scoping matters more than material selection.

What we generally recommend: do the bolsters and the leaning post properly, in Sunbrella Horizon on quick-dry foam with PTFE thread, and leave bow cushions that still have life in them alone. We do not keep a cheap tier for smaller boats. The saving comes from doing fewer pieces, not from worse material on the pieces you do. Those two items are where wear shows, where water gets into the boat, and where you sit. They are also the ones that make the whole boat look refreshed when someone steps aboard.

What we will not do is quote you the whole deck by default because it is the bigger number. If half the boat is fine, half the boat is fine.

Check under the cushion before you spend on top of it

The most common thing we find on a Sea Hunt that has been in Florida sun for six or seven years is not worn vinyl. It is a seat base that has been holding water.

Factory exterior cushions across the value segment commonly use foam that absorbs rather than drains, and once the base under it stays damp, the cushion goes soft and starts to hold a smell while the face still looks serviceable. Owners recover it, and the new vinyl is soft again in two seasons because the actual problem was never the vinyl.

We pull a cushion and check at the measuring visit. If the base is wet, the fix is rebuilding on closed-cell quick-dry foam with vented and drained bases. It costs more than a straight recover and it is the difference between a repair and a solution.

Sea Hunts we build for

  • BX 20, 22, 24 and 25. Bay boats. Bolsters and leaning post are usually the whole job.
  • Escape series. Dual console family layouts with more seating pieces.
  • Ultra 219, 225, 234, 239 and 255. The most common Sea Hunts we see. Full or partial deck packages.
  • Gamefish 25, 27 and 30. Fishing layouts, longer coaming runs, larger helm assemblies.

Questions

Sea Hunt Boat Upholstery FAQ

How much does it cost to reupholster a Sea Hunt Ultra 255?

A partial package covering forward bolsters and the leaning post assembly generally runs $3,500 to $6,000, and the full deck including bow seating, filler cushions and aft seating runs $7,000 to $11,000. Whether the seat bases need rebuilding is the biggest swing, and we check that by pulling a cushion at the measuring visit rather than guessing at it in the quote.

My cushions smell even though the vinyl looks okay. What is wrong?

The foam is holding water. Factory exterior cushions on value-built boats commonly use foam that absorbs rather than drains, and once moisture sits against the base it breaks the foam down from the inside. The face can look perfectly serviceable while the cushion underneath is finished. Recovering it will not fix that, which is why owners who recover end up soft again in two seasons. The real fix is rebuilding on closed-cell quick-dry foam with vented and drained bases.

Do I have to do the whole boat?

No, and on a Sea Hunt we often recommend against it. Bolsters and the leaning post are where wear shows, where you actually sit, and where water gets into the boat. Doing those two properly makes the whole boat read as refreshed. If your bow cushions still have life in them, leave them. We will tell you when a partial package gets you most of the result for half the money.

Is my boat worth reupholstering or should I trade it?

If the hull, rigging and power are sound, reupholstering is almost always the better financial decision, because seating is the part of a boat that visibly ages fastest and it is the cheapest part to renew. A refreshed deck also moves a boat noticeably faster if you do decide to sell. We will look at it and tell you honestly if we think the money is better spent elsewhere.
