Cobia Boat Upholstery, Built for the Sun the Boat Was Built In

Cobia builds in Fort Pierce, about an hour up the coast from our shop. Same state, same sun, same salt, which means these boats arrive with wear patterns we can predict before we see them.

That is more useful than it sounds. A boat designed and built in Florida and used in Florida fails in consistent places, and after fifty years in Delray Beach we know where to look first on one of these. It shortens the inspection and it means the quote reflects the boat rather than a shop's guess at the boat.

We are not affiliated with Cobia Boats or Maverick Boat Group. We build upholstery that fits their boats.

More seating, more places for water to sit

A significant share of Cobia's range is dual console, and dual consoles carry considerably more upholstered surface than a comparable center console: forward cockpit seating inside both consoles, a larger bow lounge, more backrests, and filler cushions to close it all up.

Every one of those is a place water can sit. The forward cockpit seats in particular are lower, more enclosed and dry out more slowly than anything on an open center console, and they are consistently the first pieces we find holding moisture.

So on a dual console the inspection matters more than on a fishing hull. We pull the forward cockpit cushions first, because that is where the answer usually is, and it decides whether the job is a recover or a rebuild.

The pieces that live in a locker

Bow filler cushions and backrests that stow get treated as afterthoughts, and they are the pieces most likely to come back wrong when a job gets done cheap.

They have to fit two ways: tight and level when installed, and small enough to actually stow in the locker the builder designed for them. A filler that is a half inch generous sits proud in the bow and will not go back in the hatch, and you notice both every single trip.

We pattern those in place, installed and stowed, which is why we measure on the boat rather than from a drawing. It is an unglamorous detail and it is a reliable indicator of who built the cushions. They also take more handling than anything else on the boat, which is why the seams go in PTFE thread and the faces in Sunbrella Horizon.

Questions

Cobia Boat Upholstery FAQ

How much does it cost to reupholster a Cobia 320?

A full deck package on a 320, covering coaming bolsters, leaning post and helm seating, bow lounge with backrests and filler cushions, and aft seating, generally runs $9,000 to $15,000. Console interior cushions add to that. Whether the bases have been holding water is the main variable, and we settle that by pulling cushions at the measuring visit before quoting a fixed price.

Why do the forward cockpit seats in my dual console go bad first?

They sit lower, they are more enclosed, and they dry out far more slowly than open cockpit seating. Water that gets in from rain or spray stays against the base, the foam absorbs it, and the cushion breaks down from underneath while the vinyl on top still looks fine. On a Cobia dual console that is the first place we inspect, because it usually determines whether the job is a straightforward recover or a rebuild with new foam and vented bases.

My bow filler cushion does not fit in the locker anymore. Can that be fixed?

Yes, and it is a patterning problem rather than a material one. Filler cushions have to fit twice, tight and level when installed and compact enough to stow in the locker the builder designed. A cushion built oversize sits proud in the bow and will not go back in the hatch. We pattern these on the boat in both positions, which is the only reliable way to get both right.

Do you work on boats in Fort Pierce and the Treasure Coast?

Yes. Our shop is in Delray Beach and we regularly work the corridor north through Jupiter, Stuart and the Treasure Coast, as well as south through Fort Lauderdale and Miami. We measure and install dockside and fabricate in the shop, so the boat stays in the water and only the cushions travel.
