Valhalla Boat Upholstery, Finished to the Standard the Boat Was Built To

Valhalla carries Viking joinery standards onto a center console, and that is exactly the problem when the soft goods age. The woodwork, the hardware and the gelcoat still look like a $1M boat. The seating stops keeping up first, and because everything around it is finished so well, tired upholstery on a Valhalla reads worse than tired upholstery on anything else.

We build to sportfish finish standards because a large share of our work comes off sportfishing boats. Faces in Sunbrella Horizon, seams sewn with PTFE thread so they outlast the fabric rather than opening first, foam specified for the way the boat actually gets used, and pieces patterned in place so they sit tight and clean against the hull instead of approximately fitting it.

We are not affiliated with Valhalla Boatworks or Viking Yachts. We build upholstery that fits their boats.

Mezzanine, helm pod and the pieces that take the abuse

The Valhalla deck layout borrows the sportfish mezzanine, and that seating takes a load nothing else on a center console takes: people sitting in wet gear, coolers underneath, direct sun most of the day, and spray over the top when the boat runs.

That is a foam and drainage problem before it is a fabric problem. We build those cushions on closed-cell quick-dry foam with vented and drained bases, because a mezzanine cushion that holds water goes soft and then sour inside two seasons no matter how good the vinyl on top is.

The helm pod is the other piece worth attention. Between the leaning post, the backrest, the flip-up bolster and the tackle station behind it, the pod is five or six separate pieces that have to look like one assembly. Doing them at different times is how they stop matching.

Northeast in summer, Florida in winter

A lot of Valhallas run the season north and winter south. That is two very different UV loads on the same boat inside twelve months, and it ages exterior seating faster than an equivalent boat that stays in one place.

If your boat runs that pattern, it changes what we specify. We will put a heavier UV package on the exterior faces and tell you honestly where it is not worth the money. It also argues for doing the whole exterior at once rather than piece by piece, because pieces installed a year apart on a migrating boat will not match by the time the third one goes on.

Valhallas we build for

  • V-28, V-29 Hybrid and V-33. Full exterior packages, typically bow seating, forward bolsters, helm pod and aft bench.
  • V-37 and V-41. The most common Valhallas we see. Full exterior plus console interior is the usual scope.
  • V-46 and V-55. Full exterior, console interior, berth cushions. On the 55, and on the Sport Yacht versions of both, the spec starts overlapping our Superyacht upholstery.

Questions

Valhalla Boat Upholstery FAQ

How much does it cost to reupholster a Valhalla V-41?

A full exterior package on a V-41, covering bow seating, forward and side bolsters, the helm pod assembly and mezzanine seating, generally lands between $15,000 and $25,000. Adding the console interior and any berth cushions pushes it toward $30,000. The largest single variable is linear feet of bolster, which on a 41 is substantial. We pattern the boat before quoting, so the number you get is fixed rather than an estimate we revise later.

Will the new upholstery match the finish quality of the rest of the boat?

That is the standard we build to and it is why sportfish work makes up so much of our shop. Faces are Sunbrella Horizon, seams are sewn with PTFE thread so they outlast the face fabric rather than failing first, hardware is marine-grade throughout, and every piece is patterned in place rather than cut to a drawing. We also color match to the canvas already on the boat, so a new mezzanine cushion does not sit next to an existing Sunshade in a slightly different white.

Can you do the work at my marina instead of hauling the boat?

Yes, and on a Valhalla that is usually what we recommend. We measure and pattern dockside, fabricate in our Delray Beach shop, and install dockside. The boat stays in the water and only the cushions leave. We work marinas throughout South Florida from Miami to Stuart.

My boat runs north for the summer. Should I do the work before or after?

Before, if the schedule allows. Doing it in the Florida off-season means the boat leaves with new seating rather than arriving north with tired seating and waiting another six months. It also means our shop is not competing with the pre-season rush for bench time, which usually gets you a better window.
